( is she trapping a poor defenseless animal inside a house and keeping it hostage, is what he wants to ask.

but he won't because he can always just open the fucking door. )

( and she'll be peering in, having been completely oblivious to heine's and carol's conversation. well, it's less 'peering' and more 'jumping in' because the sun burns, it burns bad. )

Hello? ( she holds onto heine's hand as she looks around, ) Carol, we're here!

Just a sec!

[is called down the hall, followed by the sounds of carol's bare feet on the hardwood. t-shirt, shorts, everything about her is casual -- nonthreatening, no room to conceal anything -- and she's tying her hair back as she approaches them.

lily gets a smile.]

Come in, kids. You hungry? We've got pizza.

[it's doting for lily, a peace offering for heine.]

( there’s burns on his nose and cheeks, the middle of his head where his hair parts but heine doesn’t seem all that effected by it as he lets lily hold his hand, follows after her while she leaps into the house. he’s left giovanni behind--but only for a moment, he’s safe and has probably found himself hidden under the bed by now. and heine has his phone on him, swore to text every five minutes to make sure he was hanging in and not being attacked over there.

and when carole comes close to the door heine--gives her a once over, red eyes searching her over from head to toe. any bulges in her clothes where gun holsters might be hidden, a knife pressed to her hip; she’s said she has abilities but that doesn’t mean she wanders around unarmed. but there is nothing and nothing is good and heine’s quick to dismiss the offering. )

I left something behind and I need to go back for it soon.

( her eyes light up with excitement, the sort that a little kid has in her eyes when given a new toy, and she bounces on the balls of her feet, ) Oh, oh! What's pizza? ( she pauses, looking over to heine. ) You forgot something? ( curious, but not pressing the question—well, if he says he forgot something, certainly, he did. )

Pizza is the greatest food ever invented by mankind.

[her tone is pure affectionate indulgence when she speaks to lily, this sweet little girl that carol is already so endeared to. the warnings about her are there, but so is everything carol knows about this place, about its effect on the enhanced, about her own strength.

she's not afraid of lily. she doesn't think lily is going to hurt her, or anyone, not while she's here.

to heine:]

That's okay. You at least wanna scope the place out first?

[it's a little sassy.]

( --it’s actually a good idea. he pulls his hand loose from lily’s own and walks into the house, pushes passed carol so he can search down the hallways.

hidden compartments, any weapons, things that might scare lily--he’ll search through the whole house. )

( she watches heine go on, blinking slowly. ah, he's doing his own thing. . . . carol's waiting for her, anyway. he's not hungry. she'll just eat. the house is safe, he'll be okay. )

The greatest? Even better than burgers??

[the house is safe; heine won't find much of note, aside from maybe the baseball bat in badou's room if the kid hasn't taken it out with him today. it's messy, but it's a normal house, filled with normal, safe house things.

and a cat. probably hiding somewhere in carol's room, trying to conceal its still-semi-bald patches from the world.

carol offers her hand to lily, in lieu of heine's.]

Well, burgers are pretty stiff competition, but I think pizza can definitely give 'em a run for their money. Your brother doesn't know what he's missing.

( there's a hesitance, as she looks at carol's hand—it's so much bigger than heine's child-sized hand is, and lily finds herself shy, almost squirming as she reaches out to take it, although by the way the little girl clings tightly almost immediately to the hand doesn't give any indication that the hand is unwanted, merely that she's unused to the offer, especially from an adult. a kind adult. she presses her lips together into a thin, curved line, to stifle a giggle. )

I wanna try! Could we save some for Heine and Giovanni?

[lily's little hand's got a surprisingly tight grip when she puts her mind to it, it looks like. carol squeezes reassuringly and starts to lead her into the kitchen.]

Sure we can. Heine can take some back with him if he wants.

[the last part is called down the hallway to the kid, wherever he's wandered off to. into the kitchen AND THERE IS THE PIZZA, in all its glory, sitting on the kitchen table already sliced (because it was a frozen pizza and it came like that).]

( he was busy, you know, inspecting. but after a while down the hall, through all of the rooms ( the drawers, too ) heine walks back to the front of the house, the door--where he'd left lily. well, the kitchen. since that seems to be where everyone else is.

there's not even a look towards carol as he walks passed her, presses a hand against lily's forehead and moves the hair away from her forehead, enough so he can press his lips right above her left eye. )

Bye, Lily. I'll see you later. ( ignoring all of that about pizza. he doesn't want your kindness, carol!! )

( she blinks, opening her mouth to greet him again when heine moves to kiss her forehead—and then she stops, tilting her head into the kiss. lily looks back up at him when he draws away, )

You don't want any pizza, Heine?

Don't tell us you're too proud for pizza, kid. It's the lifeblood of all young people.

[she offers him a wry smile, but she's not gonna beg him to stay if he doesn't feel comfortable doing so. carol pulls off a pizza slice for lily, setting it on a smaller plate and holding it out to her.

it's pepperoni. carol's a sucker for the staples.]

I don’t need it.

( doesn’t want it can’t even hold down his food as it is, so he won’t bother taking any. he’s done, here. so heine moves lily’s hair back into place and turns to walk right out the front door. )

( she watches him go, her hand moving up automatically to brush against his hand before he pulls away—at first, it's a pleading act, don't go—but giovanni needs him and she certainly can't deny giovanni the comfort of heine. besides, she's with carol. )

Be careful, Heine! ( is all she says; care is not something's bad, after all—even in a safe environment.

she watches him go, hand still up to her hair where his hand had lingered, and stays watching, just for a bit. )
